Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar; the term masonry can also refer to the units themselves. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, stone such as marble, granite, travertine, limestone; concrete block, glass block, and tile. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can strongly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. Masonry units, such as brick, tile, stone, glass brick or concrete block generally conform to the requirements specified in the 2006 International Building Code (IBC) Section 2103. ApplicationsMasonry is commonly used for the walls of buildings, retaining walls and monuments. Brick and concrete block are the most common types of masonry in use in industrialized nations and may be either weight-bearing or a veneer. Concrete blocks, especially those with hollow cores, offer various possibilities in masonry construction. They generally provide great compressive strength, and are best suited to structures with light transverse loading when the cores remain unfilled. Filling some or all of the cores with concrete or concrete with steel reinforcement (typically rebar) offers much greater tensile and lateral strength to structures. From Wikipedia under the

There must be a commercial packaged solution that can be applied with a squirt bottle and brushed on. Asked by reann@sbcglobal.net - Tue May 27 15:36:45 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The best general purpose cleaner for inside stonework is a very dilute solution of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid to which rubbing alcohol has been added. This can be applied with a squirt bottle and then brushed. For about a quart of solution, mix about one and one-half ounce of Rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropanol) and one-half ounce of Dawn to warm water. Mix well and apply with squirt bottle. Brush soiled areas and rinse. Unlike acid solutions and TSP (Trisodium Phosphate), this cleaning solution will usually not damage the stone at all. Q. What tools are used in the installation of PVC/SWA/PVC 10mm clipped to a masonry wall hooked up to two distribution boards? Asked by deadstar1988 - Fri Nov 7 08:28:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Tools: I'd try a masonry drill bit, an electric (corded) drill, and a screwdriver (Red Robertson). You'll need a chuck key too. As for the consumables: a handful (2 - 6) of concrete anchors (plugs), and some Red Robertson screws. Size and quantity dependant on load.
