Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar; the term masonry can also refer to the units themselves. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, stone such as marble, granite, travertine, limestone; concrete block, glass block, and tile. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can significantly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction.

Masonry units, such as brick, tile, stone, glass brick or concrete block generally conform to the requirements specified in the 2003 International Building Code (IBC) Section 2103.

Applications

Masonry is commonly used for the walls of buildings, retaining walls and monuments. Brick and concrete block are the most common types of masonry in use in industrialized nations and may be either weight-bearing or a veneer. Concrete blocks, especially those with hollow cores, offer various possibilities in masonry construction. They generally provide great compressive strength, and are best suited to structures with light transverse loading when the cores remain unfilled. Filling some or all of the cores with concrete or concrete with steel reinforcement (typically rebar) offers much greater tensile and lateral strength to structures.

How do I find out if the building I live in is reinforced masonry, or not?
Q. I'm in Reno, NV., and we've been having an earthquake swarm, with a pretty good sized 4.9 last month. I live in an older brick building, but I'm not sure if it is reinforced masonry or not. How can you tell?

A. It is most likely not reinforced, For some strange reason Reno has chosen not to enforce earthquake building standards, and most of the brick buildings are unsafe.

Where can I find a section of a steel beam to masonry wall pocket connection?
Q. Specifically an interior masonry partition wall. I know there should be some sort of metal plating that is inserted into the pocket of the wall in order for the connection to be made.

What's the strongest concrete, cement, or masonry?
Q. I'm trying to make my weight set by making the weights plates out of concrete or cement. I already made a mold so all I need to do is pour in the concrete or cement mix. What's the difference between concrete, cement, and masonry? What's the strongest and have the highest density? If concrete mix is the best to use, then what is the best concrete mix?

A. The guy above me is right on the money. Concrete is the strongest and granite, while an expensive aggregate, would be really nice. That being said, you are going to have to reinforce the heck out of this stuff. I've seen it done with fiberglass tape for small castings. If you don't do this, your weights will constantly be chipping, spalling, and cracking under the g's when you put them down. If you truly want the densest material for your weights, I'd recommend Osmium or Iridium. I'd doubt you could lift the weights if you made them out of those materials in the current mold you have and they have to be machined, they can't be cast except under very specialized conditions (very high temperatures, oxygen free atmospheres, etc.).
