The term thermal insulation can refer to materials used to reduce the rate of heat transfer, or the methods and processes used to reduce heat transfer. Heat energy can be transferred by conduction, convection, radiation or by actual movement of material from one location to another. For the purposes of this discussion only the first three mechanisms need to be considered. Thermal insulation is the method of preventing heat from escaping a container or from entering the container. In other words, thermal insulation can keep an enclosed area such as a building warm, or it can keep the inside of a container cold. Heat is transferred from one material to another by conduction, convection and/or radiation. Insulators are used to minimize that transfer of heat energy. In home insulation, the R-value is an indication of how well a material insulates. The flow of heat can be reduced by addressing one or more of these mechanisms and is dependent on the physical properties of the material employed to do this.

Can anyone name some materials used for thermal insulation?
Q. Can anyone name some materials used for thermal insulation?

A. Vacuum, like in most thermoses works well. Rockwool, fiberglass, asbestos, cellulose, polystyrene, urethane foam, and vermiculite are all materials that are also used for thermal insulation. Depends on costs, applications, etc.

Improving insulation on interior walls?
Q. I have a flat which is losing a great deal of heat through its exterior walls. As I cannot install cavity wall insulation (house is too old), I would like to improve the insulation on the walls inside and was wondering if anyone knew the best option? Choices appear to be flexible thermal lining, thermal insulation boards or studding and insulating. Can anyone tell me the best (economical) method ? I have also heard about Thermawrap but am unclear whether this is effective. thanks

A. I dont know how you call it but what I am thinking is using lumber to do the trick. You may already know its effectiveness in heat absorption. :) good luck to you.

thermal conductivity in dritherm fibreglass insulation... which is better??
Q. The dritherm fiberglass insulation I am about to use on my extension was presumed to have a value of 0.036 (W/mK) when the u-values were calculated, but has 0.035. Does the insulation improve/worsen as the figure increases/decreases? I know as the figure of the u-value decreases, it improves, but is this the same rule for the Thermal Conductivity?

A. The lower the thermal conductivity, the better the insulation. Same for U value - lower U value, better insulation. The U value says how much power is lost per square meter of surface for each degree of temperature difference. Thermal conductivity is a property of a material and is independent of the thickness of the material. All fiberglass has the same thermal conductivity (roughly). The U value is a property of a wall, window or other surface (such as your sheets of fibreglass). For a single material, it depends on the thermal conductivity and thickness of the material. It can also be calculated for composite constructions from the thermal conductivities and thicknesses of the various materials used. For windows, it can also take… [cont.]
