From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Concrete is a construction material composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) as well as other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate such as gravel, limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water, and chemical admixtures. The word concrete comes from the Latin word "concretus" (meaning compact or condensed), the past participle of "concresco", from "com-" (together) and "cresco" (to grow). Concrete solidifies and hardens after mixing with water and placement due to a chemical process known as hydration. The water reacts with the cement, which bonds the other components together, eventually creating a stone-like material. Concrete is used to make pavements, pipe, architectural structures, foundations, motorways/roads, bridges/overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls and footings for gates, fences and poles. Concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the world. As of 2006, about 7.5 cubic kilometres of concrete are made each year—more than one cubic metre for every person on Earth. Concrete powers a US $35-billion industry which employs more than two million workers in the United States alone. More than 55,000 miles (89,000 km) of highways in the United States are paved with this material. Reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete are the most widely used modern kinds of concrete functional extensions. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Removing concrete slab to build wood deck but worried about water entering basement? Q. So I have a concrete slab attached to the back of my house that is in extremely bad shape (cracked, lifted). I want to add deck off the back of my house but to do so I have to remove the concrete first. What are my options after removing the concrete to keep water out of my basement since the concrete is currently keeping the water from soaking into the ground and getting in the basement. Also, what is the best process at removing the concrete and also disposing of it. Asked by bridoc22 - Sat Apr 5 18:49:20 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since your existing concrete is cracked and lifted, putting down a heavy plastic sheet probably would be a good or better than the existing concrete. If possible you might want to slope the soil aways from the house to aid the drainage. You might also cosider a shallow french drain to help with any water that gets near the foundation. We jsut bought this farm and until we build a big barn we have to put our horses in a mechincal shed with a concrete floor. The concrete floor is smooth and the horses with their shoes will no doubt slip and slide. My question is what is the best recommendation for turning a slick concrete floor into a not skid floor. That I can perform myself. Where can I get the equipment with out hiring it done. It is only about 20 by 40 floor so it can be done in a weekend. Let me know your thoughts and ideas would be welcome. With in reason. Asked by chad R - Mon Oct 1 20:54:27 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Go to the local farm co-op and ask for a rubber horse stall mat. They are made from finely shredded old tires pressed into mats 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 inches thick. They are used in horse stalls and horse trailers to prevent the horse from slipping. They can be hosed clean without the horse slipping on the wet mat. Q. Does the addition of admixtures and plasticizers to concrete influence it's strength? Asked by suraj k - Thu Oct 18 05:33:35 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The design mix strength comes from the recipe, and the compressive strength results from the test (usually crushing) to ensure that the recipe was correct. All additives ( and setting temperature) affect the strength of concrete Answered by DavidC - Thu Oct 18 05:49:46 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "concrete" Ritchie Bros. to conduct 2010 World of Concrete charity auction
