From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Granite (pronounced /ˈɡrænɨt/) is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granites usually have a medium to coarse grained texture. Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry. Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite has a color index (i.e. the percentage of the rock made up of dark minerals) of less than 25%. Outcrops of granite tend to form tors, and rounded massifs. Granites sometimes occur in circular depressions surrounded by a range of hills, formed by the metamorphic aureole or hornfels. Granite is nearly always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone. The average density of granite is located between 2.65 and 2.75 g/cm, its compressive strength usually lies above 200 MPa and its viscosity at standard temperature and pressure is 3-6 • 10 Pa·s. The word granite comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock. Granitoid is used as a descriptive field term for general, light colored, coarse-grained igneous rocks for which a more specific name requires petrographic examination. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I cut granite floor tiles? Q. I have tiled many times before, just not with granite. I have a diamond blade tile cutter, and the usual tile snapper. My 'power glide' snapper doesn't mention that I can snap granite tiles with it, therefore how do I cut to size granite tiles? Do I have to put each tile through the electric tile cutter, won't the edges of the tile risk getting chipped? Also do I have to get a special adhesive for the granite tiles (other than normal wood-to floor adhesive) to stick them down? Asked by rikerlock - Thu Mar 22 18:35:31 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can use the diamond blade tile cutter but to avoid chipping use it very slowly with lots of water and if possble with the tile upside down. As for securing the tiles to the floor you need a suitable stone adhesive and follow the instructions as some of the more porous granites will show the colour of the adhesive through them and so therefore may need sealing beforehand. Answered by Amandoh - Thu Mar 22 18:46:05 2007 What color granite and tiles with mahogany cabinets? Q. We are thinking of going with Mahogany for kitchen cabinates. Would love to hear suggestions for color of granite , flooring and hardwood Thanks in advance Asked by vmm2004 - Tue Jul 25 22:43:26 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I assume the mahoghany is a deep reddish tone? Try granites called "Jupurana Santa Cecilia", "Giallo Santo", "Giallo Portofino" (my personal favorite) or "Venetian Gold". All these granites have earth tones that will compliment the color of the wood and they also have some garnet flecks in them that pull out the red in the wood. Unfortunately, commercial granite names are not standardized so what one vendor calls it may not be what it's called by another vendor. Try going to this website so you can get an idea of what the granites I mentioned look like and print them out. You can try asking for them by name but, in the event that they call it something different, take the print outs as back up to show them what you're looking for and… [cont.] Answered by elk312 - Wed Jul 26 01:26:37 2006 Does a darker colored granite need to be sealed as often as a lighter colored one?
Q. We just put in very dark brown granite kitchen countertops and the installer said that we don't need to seal it. Is he correct? He said if the granite was a lighter color, then, yes, it would need to be sealed. How often is it wise to seal the granite, if it needs to be done? Asked by Radar - Fri Jan 30 04:26:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The darker colors are harder naturally. You won t hurt anything by using a sealer. As far as how often, what ever the product you use take their advise. It usually varies from 6months to once a year.GL Answered by rob s - Fri Jan 30 05:43:31 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "granite" City of Winder facing hard choices on Granite Hotel's future - Online Athens
