What is the difference between masonry cement and portland type 1 cement?
Q. Can type 1 portland mixed with sand be substituted for masonry cement? What is the benefit or trade offs?
Asked by Alvin C - Sun Jun 3 21:14:51 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on what you are going to do with it. Masonry Cement is designed specifically for use in mortars used for brickwork and block work, external rendering and internal plastering. Portland Cement type 1 is a general purpose cement.

What is the difference between stucco and masonry?
Q. What is the difference between stucco construction of a house and masonry construction of a house? Or does the two go hand in hand?
Asked by batman253 - Wed Mar 22 08:59:42 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Very simply put, Masonry is the material of building, IE: Bricks, Blocks, etc. Stucco is the coating, no matter of what formulation, that is used to cover masonry. It can also be applied to wood framed houses as well as Block built. Stucco is an inclusion in the construction of a house NOT the term used for the structure itself. Rev. Steven

This house has wooden window moldings, but is sided with some kind of pressed-board siding, like Masonite. I believe the paint is latex-based. Any suggestions?

Do I need to seal the inside of my new masonry planter boxes?
Q. I have just had some planter boxes made, masonry with a cement render on the outside. Do I need to seal the inside of them before I paint? I am concerned about water peeling the paint, and the appearance of salt patches. They have good drainage in them. I want to paint them with Dulux Tuscan paint to give a limewashed effect.
Asked by ro - Wed Nov 5 05:52:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes you will have to water proof the inside of the planter box, or it will leach through to the outer side, and get behind the paint and could start to peel paint ,also yes you will start to see some sort of calcification to rendered wall side. I would suggest you caulk up all internal corners then waterproof internal walls, your local hardware such as Bunnings will have several products there to suit your needs and budget. Good luck. P.S Clay bricks absorb and hold a lot of water ounce wet for days try test ,put brick in bucket of water for half an hour and take out and see how long it takes to dry, your potting soil mix will hold a lot of water too,and don't forget to put some fly wire mesh over your drain holes as potting mix and plant… [cont.]

what's the initiation to advance to the 28th and 29th degree of the scottisch rite masonry?
Q. I've been reading up on masonry and know someone who is a member and is nervous about advancing to the 29th degree. also are all initiatiations the same depending on what level you are advancing? also any additional info would help because its hard to find true valid info since its all supposed to be kept secret.

A. How odd. Most Scottish Rite degrees are given during reunion classes, from the 4th to the 32nd. It's unusual that someone - who had obviously been to the 4th through the 27th degrees and knew how those degrees were conferred - would be nervous about the 28th and 29th degrees. Seems kind of hokey.

How can you become a member of the masonry?
Q. I was wondering how to become a member of the masonry. There is a mason meeting place near my house (i know you can't just walk in an join. You have to be invited.) Do you have to know a mason?
Asked by aaron b - Wed Jan 23 21:51:24 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are actually closer to the walking in part, as no one is invited to join. The easieset way to become a Mason is to ask one. If you know someone then they can recommend you. If you do not, then you can look in your yellow pages or go to the Grand Lodge website (easiest to find using Google type in "Grand Lodge of (your state)". You'll fill out a petition which will give the members of the Lodge a good idea of who you are. There are some requirements and they'll let you know of them. After you petition, they'll interview you and then vote on you. Some of the basic requirments for joining are being of a legal age (mostly 21 years old, some though are 18), Belief in a Supreme Being, have a desire to be useful to your fellow… [cont.]

A. hey zeke... some manufacturers still make masonry coatings which are typically a water borne medium grade vinyl or vinyl acrylic blended resin...these products are generally a higher build, inexpensive version of house paints, but are recommended specifically for masonry substrates. the reason they're specific to masonry surfaces, and not wood, is due to the fact that these resins don't have the same ability to expand and contract as house paint resins do...from an asthetic perspective, these products do provide an economic alternative to the more expensive house paints but provide only minimal amount of protection to the surface. because of new technology, new resins and increased usage in other types of sidings (metal, vinyl etc.),… [cont.]

How do I clean masonry mess and grout smears from ceramic tile floor?
Q. We had major renovations recently to include a new covered back porch with brick columns. The porch floor is ceramic. The brick masons left quite a bit of masonry (mortor) mess on the floor from large white smears to chunks of mortor. And the tile guy after applying the grout smeared the grout over the floor but never returned to do the final clean up. Help ! How can we clean this mess and get the tile back to its' original finish? We have already pressure washed which had no affect at all.

A. Tools: I'd try a masonry drill bit, an electric (corded) drill, and a screwdriver (Red Robertson). You'll need a chuck key too. As for the consumables: a handful (2 - 6) of concrete anchors (plugs), and some Red Robertson screws. Size and quantity dependant on load.
