Travertine is a terrestrial sedimentary rock, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from geothermally heated hot-springs. Similar (but more porous) deposits formed from ambient temperature water are known as tufa.

Features

Travertine forms from geothermal springs and is often linked to siliceous systems which form siliceous sinter. Macrophytes, bryophytes, algae, cyanobacteria and other organisms often colonise the surface of travertine and are preserved, giving travertine its distinctive porosity.

Some springs have temperatures high enough to exclude macrophytes and bryophytes from the deposits, consequently, deposits are generally less porous than tufa. Thermophilic microbes are important in these environments and stromatolitic fabrics are common. When deposits are apparently devoid of any biological component, they are often refered to as calcareous sinter.

How to remove grout from unsealed travertine tile?
Q. Our plumber tiled our bathroom with travertine tile, did not seal it and then used sandstone grout which stained the beautiful tile an ugly green. We've tried using delicate cleaning solutions but the stains aren't coming up. Should we use something more aggressive that might harm the polish and then polish the stone seperately.

A. There are some more OTC grout removers and strong cleaners but I have second thoughts as to if they ll even touch this type of grout removal and stain. This type of stone , which is very porous, it more than likely ruined. If the plumber said he was able to do this type of work ( which doesn t fall under his license) is liable for replace ment.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar .. GL

Is travertine good for kitchen and bath countertops?
Q. We are about to put in countertops and I wanted granite, but it's too expensive. I've been told Travertine is excellent for kitchen/bath countertops. I've also read that it is horrible for countertops because it is a limestone. I really need clarification about travertine. Thanks.

A. Bath is fine. But the kitchen needs a tougher surface that is less porous or you will have chips and stains everywhere. Spring for the granite in the kitchen. You can usually get a good deal through Home Depot or Lowes. The kitchen countertop is not a good place to cut the budget.

Sealing travertine tile so that is looks wet?
Q. I just installed a travertine backsplash for my bathroom sink. Is there a product I can get to seal it with that will give it a wet shiny look? Should I use it before or after I seal it? I bought 511 sealer, but Im wondering if I should apply something else to it before I seal it to make it look shiny?

A. 511 won t give you that shiny look. It s a great sealer but not the look you want. I ve been out of tiling for a year now and I don t remember the product you need. It s made by the same company that makes Miracle 511.The name escapes me. Check where you bought 511 ( I m guessing HD) they ll have it or know. Don t grout it yet until you seal it or you may stain the travertine.. P S When you do find that product it ll also bring out the colors in the tile so test on some spares (3/4/5tiles)1st to make sure you like the colors
